I am a great walker; it’s my favorite form of exercise and it does wonders for my mental health. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was walking for over two hours a day in a desperate attempt to maintain my sanity and breathe some fresh air. Either alone or with a friend, I was doing laps in lower Manhattan, wildly pumping my arms up and down as I tried to stay warm. (These days, I do my best to hit my 10,000 daily steps, but I try not to be too hard on myself if I don’t.)
Over the past few years I have experimented with different things to maximize the efficiency of my walks, which is how I started using ankle weights. It’s an easy way to enhance the benefits of a walk, especially on days when I’m short on time and can’t spend a full hour outside. I’ve even been known to strap on ankle weights before I go grocery shopping or run errands.
They come in a variety of different sizes and weights. There are even adjustable options that you can customize to suit your workout. I use 1 or 2 pound weights for walking and 3 pound weights to make my YouTube Pilates classes a bit more challenging. They might look a bit silly and retro, but that’s what I love about them.
Below, I’ve rounded up seven different types of ankle weights to elevate your fall walks. They come in a range of prices, so you can find the ones that suit you best without killing your budget. Pick up a pair before you hit the pavement and get your blood pumping.

Do. I have them and use them for Pilates style workouts. You can definitely use them for walking – but as I’m rather petite I find them to be a little too big for me to walk around personally. It’s a great investment if you have a home gym. , however, or if you really want to amp up your walks and don’t mind them being a bit large.
