The majority of people who come to me for nutrition advice say one of two things: they think they’re eating healthy enough and they know what to do, they just don’t.
First of all, just because we know it doesn’t automatically mean we will. Our thoughts dictate our actions and often the people I work with are so downhearted and discouraged by the number of disappointing diet experiences that they begin to believe they will never be able to achieve their health goals.
Second, there is a marked difference between healthy eating and balanced eating. You can totally make healthy food choices, but if you don’t know how to make them correctly (in the right combinations, in the right portions, and at the right frequency), even healthy foods can spike your blood sugar and cause storage. your body. big.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll have seen something about the importance of stabilizing blood sugar. A balanced blood sugar level is super important. So important in fact, it’s how our bodies were created to function.
Newborns are checked to make sure blood sugar levels are stable before leaving the hospital. Babies maintain this stability naturally. Anyone who has children knows that a baby or a small child is hungry as soon as he wakes up.
Babies are given breast milk or formula, which is a perfect balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates to stabilize blood sugar. Not many changes as they grow either.
Once the kids start eating solid foods, God forbid, you should leave the house with a small child and not bring a snack, am I right? It’s their blood sugar that’s going down. They get “hungry” and start bothering you for a snack.
This same process happens in our adult bodies, but in our busy world and with all these diets telling us “don’t eat this” or even “don’t eat if you want to lose weight”, we suck it and ignore it. these cues to eat.
Our bodies haven’t changed much since we were babies in the way we absorb and metabolize food, we’ve just become bigger humans. And the older we get, the crazier our eating habits seem to get.
No fat, cut carbs, count calories, don’t eat at night, don’t eat in the morning, eat three meals a day and no snacks, eat five meals a day and yes, snack – the constant roadblock of information overload of, quite frankly, misinformation has the majority of our population either on a diet roller coaster that they can’t seem to get out of, or so confused that they do nothing.
How does it work for you? I dare say that it is safe to say that it is not. Nearly 30% of adults in Canada are obese and more than 31% of children aged 12 to 17 are obese. (The numbers for 2012-2013 were the most recent data I could find on childhood obesity.)
Obviously, diets don’t work and doing nothing certainly doesn’t work. What works is the stabilization of blood sugar.
Stabilizing blood sugar works for all bodies. This is how we came into this world, and the sooner we return to it, the sooner we will see things begin to change. But diets don’t teach you that because the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar industry and if you found something that worked for you, your spouse, your children, anywhere and in any situation, you would never go back to the diet. It wouldn’t be good for their bottom line.
Rather than depriving yourself, restricting foods, counting calories or eliminating whole food groups, why not learn to eat the foods you love in a way that creates hormonal balance, stabilizes blood sugar , boosts metabolism and puts your body in a place where it naturally releases stored fat, protects lean muscle, increases energy and eliminates food cravings?
You will create a healthy inflammatory response – inflammation is the root of all disease – reduce your risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease and heart disease. strokes and you will create health in your body as your body naturally releases the weight.
It’s really simple. Eating foods in the right combinations, in the right portions, and at the right frequencies throughout the day will do all of this.
One thing to remember, this is not a diet. This means that results will usually not happen overnight. But they will happen, and in a healthy way.
Wherever you are in your health journey, it didn’t happen overnight and reversing these effects may take some time. The duration generally depends on how long your body has lived in a state of deprivation and imbalance.
What I do know though, is that it’s less about your age and more about how long you’ve been doing/not doing the things that serve your health and your body.
