One of the leading private equine practices in Texas, Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery (ESMS), has installed the first standing equine CT (Computed Tomography) scanner in the state. ESMS, with one of the highest volumes of equine cases in the United States, is excited to add the Asto CT Equina® scanner to its comprehensive suite of equine veterinary services to improve outcomes and welfare. patients.

ESMS Veterinarian Dr. Chad Marsh reflects on the importance of technology “Having a permanent CT scanner on-site at ESMS greatly enhances our diagnostic imaging capabilities and provides a safer and more efficient alternative to traditional CT scanners. which generally require horses to be placed under general anesthesia. Whether you use it for pre-purchase exams, imaging complex lameness issues, or diagnosing neck or head problems, having a CT scanner right here at the hospital will allow us to better diagnose and treat patients who previously would have been referred elsewhere for advanced imaging. We are pleased to partner with Asto CT to bring this advanced technology to horse owners across Texas. »

Standing CT technology has changed the face of screening and diagnosis in equine medicine. Safe, fast and high quality scans have made this modality an accessible and effective tool for diagnosing pathology not detectable on x-rays (image 1). The Asto CT Equina® scanner is currently used by Racing Victoria in Australia to screen all horses entered in the Melbourne Cup, before they race to aid in the early detection of potentially catastrophic injuries.

ESMS services a large number of western sport horses, including racehorses, rodeos and show horses. The installation of the Equina CT scanner aims to provide owners with more information and improve the overall welfare of horses. Not limited to sport horses, Equina has beneficial uses for all equines, for head, neck and lower extremity diagnostics. Indeed, one of the first patients of the new ESMS scanner was a famous jumper. The patient scan was completed in just 10 minutes from sedation to full scan.

ESMS CEO Kirk Eddleman comments: “This new CT scanner gives our own experienced team another powerful tool to use right here on site, giving customers peace of mind and helping to improve the quality of life of our equine patients. We are proud to be the first and only clinic in the state of Texas to have a permanent CT scanner, and we encourage our colleagues from other practices to submit their cases and take advantage of this technology.

Asto CT CEO David Ergun expresses his delight at ESMS to add the Equina scanner to its services: “We are thrilled to see this breakthrough imaging technology evolve into such a high volume veterinary practice. Several academic centers are already using Equina, and it’s great to see it in private practice as well. We know our scanner will be a valuable tool for the clinic’s veterinarians and will benefit their many patients. We look forward to the future as we install the Equina in clinics around the world.

ESMS welcomes CT patients at their clinic in Weatherford starting in November. More information can be found at For more information on visiting Asto CT Equina
